The Hayden Island Community Safety Initiative is a community based non-profit organization of volunteers on Hayden Island. Located on the Columbia River within the City of Portland Oregon, Hayden Island is a gateway to Portland and to Oregon, and Oregon’s only island community.
Hayden Island has historically been noted for its exceptional safety & livability, as well as being a popular center for shopping & boating. It features the Jantzen Beach Shopping Center, six (6) boat marinas, numerous businesses, multiple condos & apartments, and four (4) floating home moorages. However, rising crime violence in 2020 & 2021 has now reached alarming levels on the Island, threatening our Island’s livability.
In early 2021, a group of concerned residents began meeting together to discuss what could be done about the rising crime on Hayden Island. After continuing to experience rising crime rates and witnessing the impact crime violence was having on Island residents & businesses, this group decided something had to be done to make this island a safer place to live and work again. That decision subsequently led to the formation of the Hayden Island Community Safety Initiative Inc, an Oregon Non-Profit (Registry #183089599), established in June of 2021. The vision of the Hayden Island Community Safety Initiative is to bring together everyone that live & work on the Island for the common goal of improving safety & livability on the Island by taking action to reduce crime & improve safety. Currently the majority of crimes occurring on the island are substantially under-reported, so our immediate priority is to generate a more accurate & complete record of criminal activity on the island, which is critical in creating public awareness and in generating the resources needed to combat the level of crime violence on the Island.
The focus of the Hayden Island Community Safety Initiative (aka Hayden Island CSI) is to compile, analyze, and accurately report safety & security incidents and issues affecting businesses & residences on Hayden Island by creating an Island-wide “COMMUNITY COMMUNICATION & COORDINATION CENTER” to share safety & security data, and coordinate a response to address safety & security issues as they occur. Hayden Island CSI’s Board of Directors are all volunteers, and as such receive no compensation either directly or indirectly. All donations are used solely for the purpose of enhancing safety and reducing crime violence on the island to make Hayden Island a much safer place to live & work. As an Oregon Non-Profit for Public Benefit, Hayden Island CSI has additionally filed an IRS Form 1023 Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3), approval of which is expected soon.
In addition to improving the communication & security awareness with everyone that lives and works on the island, Hayden Island CSI works to improve the communication & coordination with local law enforcement & governing agencies in order to optimize security resources available to the Island. Our Hayden Island CSI organization will not hesitate to seek additional resources including private security services to enhance island safety to supplement law enforcement resources when & where those additional resources are needed.
It’s only through a united resolve of the residents and businesses on Hayden Island to fight crime violence that a high level of safety & security on the island can be restored, and that effort will make Hayden Island a substantially safer place to live, work, and visit.
